Say Hello to Scarface
Can you guess where she gets her name?
Howdy, fellas. I'm Slim. I picked up this Monte about a month ago and I've finally got the time on my hands to start cracking down on everything that needs doing to it.
I'm a young man, and while I've got a serviceable amount of head knowledge from soaking up all things hot rod since I was in a stroller, I have unfortunately very little hands on experience in comparison. Monte Carlos have also been a more recent love interest of mine, so I'll probably have some dumb question about parts interchangeability, aftermarket availability, and wheel spacing. For now here's the plan for the car:
The car as it stands is a 350 small block bored 20 over to a 353, and it's sitting in front of a Turbo 350 trans. 245s at all corners. Previous owner has explained that the car has a "Z/28 cam", but has not specified year or source. MSD ignition and steering like cake batter.
Long term I'd like to put a 400 crank in it, which would make it a 380. I'm going to ditch the front bench seat in favor of a couple buckets and mount a ratchet shifter between them. (It's at this juncture I should mention I have little intention to go full purist mode on this) It needs a new steering wheel and dash. I plan on repainting it. I have a bit of paint experience from a job I had at a hot rod shop a few months back, so I plan on doing it myself. Gloss black body with matte black hood and roof. Car used to be a vinyl roof, so I have all the old chrome trim, which I think I'll repurpose to separate the matte on the roof with the gloss on the body. It'll have a thin gold stripe running the length of the body down the sides.
Obviously, it isn't "Scarface" without the big old "scar" on the hood, so The paint will end where that rust begins.
So it'll be Paint > Thin section of Bare Metal > Rust < Thin section of Bare Metal < Paint if that makes any sense.
I'd like to put some modern components in the suspension - stiffer sway bars, tubular control arms, stuff like that (Which is where I'll probably be asking about aftermarket availability and interchangeability). Stiffen everything up. New wheels and tires as well. Debating Torq Thrusts, but they're kind of typical so I'm still shopping. Definitely want to keep wheels on the more affordable end. With the whole styling of the car I have planned, I want about a 17 inch wheel and 275s in back at least. Probably stick with 245s up front.
Obviously, this is a very long term plan and I intend to hang on to the car for a good long while. Just sort of spouting all my thoughts into this post.
