I replaced one of them seals and used a Advance Auto parts seal as the replacement.... yep brand new seal leaked..... bought a seal direct from GM and no leaks!

Moral of this story, use GM gaskets and seals or plan on doing the job more then once!!

Also make sure the axle is in the whole way and make sure there is no gouges in the seal race etc that could cause leaks

Do you think the driver side axle seal could be replaced by just removing the strut to steering knuckle bolts, while still leaving the axle nut tightened on the other end of the axle?

Idk why you would want to do this..... You take them bolts out and you need a alignment... And I don't believe you will get enough out of it to get the axle out. Need to remove the lower ball joint.

Or remove the hub and let the ball joint alone

wouldn't you need an alignment if you took the balljoint out? I heard you should get an alignment anytime you remove/replace any suspension components strut, tie rods, ball joint. Etc. maybe I just got some bad info? Still can't find the correct axle nut torque. Some say 118 ft/lbs, some say 159 ft/lbs.

The lower ball joint just bolts in, there is no "adjustment" where you would unbolt so no alignment would be needed.
