New Monte owner some problems
Hello my name is Daniel, im 20 years old and just bought my first Monte, it's a 2000 ls in black, and I have a couple problems I can't figure out, maybe you guys could help me. Number 1, my high beams do not go on at all, I've replaced the bulbs and checked the fuses and that's about it, number 2, only one of my turn signals show up on my dash cluster, they both work though, and number 3, my turn signals randomly stop working, I've tried everything and the only way I can get them back to working is to pull over, turn the car off, pull the fuse and put it back in, and yes I've replaced it already, and than turn the car back on. If someone could please help that would be greatly appreciated, I don't need any more tickets and I don't wanna have the car impounded. Please help!!

Hi Danny.
Can't say for sure , but considering all three problems involve the multi-function switch I'd suggest looking there first. It's a fairly common problem with most GM cars from the 80's on up. Fairly easy fix but requires a few unusual tools, i.e.external torx socket for the screw under the column. The switch is not cheap and problems have been reported with some of the aftermarket ones.

I believe Plumbob hit the nail on the head looking at that multi-function switch. Odds are the issue is rooted there.
I'll give you two other things to check out:
- ensure all turn signal lights do actually function. I believe if you activate the hazard switch you can answer that question.
- The hazard switch is also the flasher module in these cars, that might be another item to look at.
But, I would focus diag efforts on the multifunction switch.

Ah hah!
Now it sounds like you have more than one electrical problem. The Maniac's additional suggestion is a good one. Intermittent, erratic, or fast flashing of the turn signals is usually a symptom of a bad hazard switch. The hazard switch is an easy fix and costs around $20 so I would start there first. It can be accessed by removing the dash panel which is held in by about 8- 7mm screws. Here's a how to video:
. I don't find it necessary to remove the column trim pieces though. If your careful, the dash panel flexes enough to remove it.
The high beam issue is still probably the MFS. Here's a great thread listing common problems the hazard and MFS posted by one of our members:

You may also have some ground problems. I know rust is a big problem in NY and could be a culprit. Check and clean ground connections everywhere, especially the engine compartment, but remove the negative battery cable first or you might have to do a security relearn procedure.
As for the temp., 180o is not too hot. The factory recommended t-stat is set at 195o, but are available for 180o. Temp. gauge should show the needle at about staight up.

Man, you have more electrical problems around that steering wheel than I've ever heard. Makes me wonder if somebody's had the wheel open and didn't get connectors back together right. Electrical probing is the only way to know for sure, but the most common problem is with the switches themselves, both the Cruise Control and Radio.
Here's an old "How To" thread from this site that's worth reading for entertainment value if nothing else. This is the funniest thread I've ever seen on this site. LMAO!
