The transmission is actually the only non-reliable and weak link in these cars.

TripleEdgePerformance.com is a great read on the 4t65e transmissions. Also a good guy to buy performance transmissions from.

Not bad prices on that tranny for what you're getting. I have less into my AR-15. LOL PLus I have acsess to a complete automotive shop so I can do the swap myself in comfort.

HOw about these?
Performance Packages: 3800 Performance

What sorts of gains could I expect with lets say the... Stage 3? 300 HP at the crank? Would it be a "tranny nuking recipe"?

Don't bother with "packages" every engine is different.

Typically you would either get headers, or a zzp downpipe. A cold-air intake, 1.9 modified rockers, a 180* thermostat, colder spark plugs, a good tune, and you would drop your pulley size from the stock 3.8 to either a 3.6 or 3.4.

The 3.4 with those supporting mods and a good tune will easily be around 300HP

Facinating. I've never owned a forced induction car. That was an interesting read, I'd have to go through it again but it was a great effort on the part of the writer.

Why not consider a Pontiac GTP? I own a 99' Red Coupe GTP and love it!

I suppose that technically speaking the GTP (Or the Buick GS for that matter) would be practically the same car. And they have their nice points as well (HUD is bitchin') But...I kinda like the look of the Monte a little more. Not to say that the Poncho is not a good looking car, and that red one in your sig is *&^%ing hot. I guess if the right GTP came along and bit me in the ***, I might bite. Why did you go with the GTP? Are you just a Poncho fan, or was it a looks/feeling thing? Why did you go GTP?

Hell man, I am far from making a decision (I got a pretty wife and two beutifull little girls that kinda eat up my car hobby time/$$$) and get my kicks via Forza 4 for now. LOL. I also get to tool around shotgun in my best friends 69 Z/28 DZ 302 and his Brothers 70 Judge on occasion. Plus I have had my hand up the skirt of that Z/28 pretty far. But when the time comes I wanna have my fish all lined up. LOL

But I am suprised that no 80's owners have chimed in. Those are still very much on my radar.

I had a 1996 Ford Mustang GT before this car, I also owned a 01' Monte Carlo SS previous to the Mustang as well. The Mustang was cramped and the seats were uncomfortable and I was looking for something that put out as much power (or even more) and get better mpg's. The GTP is FAR more comfortable and the HUD is amazing, the BOSE audio that comes in the GTP's are amazing as well. I love the looks of them whether it's a coupe or sedan. The coupes will outright put the Mustang's face into the ground and make them eat dirt, 4.6's put out about 200hp to the wheels and the GTP puts out about 240hp to the wheels (260hp to the crank). Not to mention the GTP's weigh almost the same as the Mustang and have much more room, when I say "much more room" I mean about 2ft extra (in the coupes). I expected not much room in my GTP but when I got curious I got into the back seat (I'm 6'1") my knees didn't touch the driver seat and had plenty of leg room and head room. On my way back from court yesterday I was averaging 27mpg's doing 70mph. My advice, don't get a Mustang. Yes they are fun and but there are TOO MANY around simply. Why have a car everyone else has? Get a car that will turn some heads and make people think (wow now that's pretty sweet). I still get all giddy when I hear that Eaton whine.
This is my 99' Pontiac Grand Prix GTP btw
