Hey all,
I just purchased a 2006 SS, silver with 18,800 miles. I will be taking delivery in about a week and am excited to get it sorted out and on the road.
I am a specialist for 1961-1967 Lincoln convertibles, but the Monte Carlo was too beautiful to pass up.
Only issues that I currently know about are that one of the black speaker-covers on the rear package tray needs to be replaced, and there is a problem with the idiot lights. Otherwise the car is pretty perfect. The last / first owner changed the oil every 1500 miles, garaged it, and maintained it only at the Chevy Dealer in his area. Records on Carfax show visits about three times a year to deal with oil changes, and various inspections and modest work. Other than changing the oil about 10 times, he replaced the battery cables, the radio was replaced, he had the suspension checked about 7 times (no work performed), had the electrical system checked about 5 times (no work performed). The car runs and drives like new with not a rattle or a creak.
If anyone can comment on reasons or resolutions to the idiot lights, or knows where I can get a set of black rear speaker covers, that would be great!
I will report back as I get into this car.
John
When I purchased the car, the "check airbag" light was on. This stays on continuously.
Also, after I had the car about a week, the check engine light came on after I had the tires replaced.
I took the car over to O'Reillys and they plugged in their code analyzer.
The check engine code was for the crank positioning sensor. They were able to clear that one, and "check engine" has not come on again.
They were unable to reset the "check airbag" light.
I have looked at several U tube videos on this issue, and suggestions include replacement or reprogramming of the airbag module under the passenger seat.
A discussion with a Chevy dealership suggested that there may be other issues.
Maybe I should just take it to the dealership?
PS I have been able to replace the broken speaker grills, missing driver door reflector, missing chrome trim around the grill, sun damaged rear SS badge and Chevy "Bow TIe" badges on the trunk lid and grill. I have replaced the battery and tires. Oil changed. Car has been buffed and sealed and looks liike new. The hood scoop is off a Mustang. I removed it to see the holes in the hood. Then reinstalled it. I really don't want to replace or repair the hood.
I will probably be selling it but want to get the airbag code and possibly crank positioning sensor code dealt with. (the crank positioning code has not come up again).

Frankly clearing it isn't particularly useful anyways. Unless the issue was fixed, it's usually just a matter of time before that test cycle completes and triggers a light again.
I wouldnt be surprised if their scan tools had the airbag reset function disabled anyways. They dont sell airbag parts so they really shouldn't be touching that light - too much risk for misuse (someone going to get the code cleared before a test drive / selling their car private party).

I agree, need to know the fault code to know what to do next. There aren't a ton, but having that would direct you to which module to look at (is a sensor bad, is a bag bad, control module issues, wiring problems, etc).

That or a 3rd party shop that deals with SRS stuff. Dealership will probably be the most expensive option.

That Airbag issiue might be the sensor on the Front of the Car. I had an 06 Pontiac Torrent and it did that turned out to be the sensor on the front of the car it was between the Radiator and the front bumper. Replace it with a new Doorman unit and it went away.
