Talking New to the Forum

My name is Chris and this is my first time to join ANY forum.

I own a 1986 Monte Carlo with 62,000 original miles on it. It was my grandmother's and has been well taken care of. I guess it's become a new hobby of mine in the last few months. I'm learning more about cars (or at least this one) every day!

Default Carb Question

I was going to attempt to rebuild the original carb on my 1986 Monte Carlo... But then someone told me to go with a 600. I don't know what size the original is, but would it be better get the 600, 650, or keep the one I already have?

This is for a 305 engine.

Welcome to the forum. For the carb, depends on what you plan on doing to the motor over time? Most people that are serious into hot rodding the motor will drop the 305 and put in a 350, so if you are planning that route, I wouldn't spend too much money on a new carb, maybe just rebuilding and cleaning your current carb would be the way to go?

I think I posted this in the wrong forum area. Still figuring it out.
Thanks for the advice! I may do the 350 one day, but I can get a 600 carb for a good price. However, I would only do it if it made a noticeable difference.
If I can hot rod around (even a little) with a 305, I'm willing to get a new carb.

Here is an article on how you can get 325 horses out of a 305 with bolt on parts. Food for thought if nothing else

The carb is most likely a quadrajet.
Here is an interesting write up about the quadrajet
