Help needed on my 01 multi function directional!
Great site here!
My 4th Monte Carlo now has over 200,000 miles on it and is in need of some repairs. This is one that I'm confused on....
I am in need of replacing the multi function directional switch on my 01 Monte Carlo.
I was wondering if the steering wheel needs to be removed to perform this task and if so, what needs to be done with the airbag relay, what gets disconnected? I've been out of the auto repair buisness since 1979 so I've never dealt with airbags.
One person told me that the steering wheel didn't have to be removed.
Thanks everyone for any info that you may have!

I have not looked at it, but on an '01 Monte, I don't think the wheel needs to come off or the column. More then likely, it's much like the Grand Ams I work on. Probably a couple of screws/bolts on the underside of the collar around the column, pop those out, pull the collar apart and off and there it probably sits.
Hopefully someone can chime in with more experience then my speculation.

Thank you Maniac and owens91.
I need to replace the switch because I have to hold the high beam lever on manually because the switch won't click into position. It's been like this for a few years but it doesn't affect the inspection. I was thinking of finally getting it to work right until last night the flex coupling on the exhaust under the manifold blew out. Now I'm wondering if it's telling me that it's time for a new car.
