86 monte ss differential
Good Morning,
This may sound dumb but I am no mechanic.
I am changing my differential cover and the parts guy gave me my gear oil and some limited slip additive. I do not think my rear end is POSI is it?
I have the cover off and I cant tell. I do know that the old tires when i bought it. The ride rear was almost bald and the left was like new. Like the kid was doing a lot of burn outs..
Can anyone tell me? Also, I am ordering the new cover and I believe the rind gear is 7.5...

If the car is doing a one wheel peel it does not have a posi rear end. Other then lighting up your tires up to see if you leave one or two burnout marks the easiest way to tell is pop the housing cover and look for a clutch pack at each end of the carrier where the axles intersect. If the clutch packs are present it is a posi differential. No clutch packs and it's an open (one leg) differential.

If your Monte is a true SS.. (Not a clone)
From the factory it should have came with a posi rear end...(Limited slip)
Or its quite possible the rear end has been replaced with a non posi...
To truly know what the rear end is... There should be a tab(tin tag) on 1 of the rear cover bolts... That should tell you everything you need to know about the rear gearing..ring size etc... depending on the ratio determines the ring gear size...

Hey guys, Thanks for the replies. Turns out she is not a posi. Oh well. Must have been changed along the line somewhere. But I finally finished ... Cleaned up the rear end,Battery tray and put on my Vette Wheels... I like the look.
