Default 2001 Monte Carlo questions

Hello from Canada! Just bought a 2001 LS which needs a little work. Could anyone help me with these questions:1. How do I get the anti- theft code for my sound system? I have read I must know it before i disconnect the battery or the sound system will be locked out.
2. Must I disconnect the airbags before servicing the intermediate steering shaft?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

You should be fine with the audio code. What you are reading is most likely NOT even activated, we disconnect/replace batteries all the time without being locked out. It is mostly just for when you are putting a radio in and need the VIN to match the radio code. I wouldn't worry about it.

How are you servicing the ISS? Are you just going to lube it up? Then no on the airbag. If you want to replace the whole thing (not worth it unless broken) then I would to be on the safe side remove the airbag fuse AND disconnect the battery.

Greetings!

As Mike (Chibi) mentioned the TheftLock system is usually not active, but if by chance yours is information for obtaining the code needed to unlock it is posted in this thread:

Thanks for your help Chibi.
On the ISS, I intend to remove it and lube it using the method at colinkraft.com Should be OK without deactivating air bags?

You can lube it without removing it

Just take bottom cover off (above the pedals), you will see a black rubber boot, that you can pull back and spray some lithium grease on the knuckle from there. Turn your wheel and spray some more, turn the other way and spray some more.

Close it up and be happy and only 5 minutes.

Here's a quick thread with some pics: ISS Intermediate Steering Shaft Fix Sticky - Problems with my car! - NAIOA

I do this almost every spring, not terrible.

I know with my '04 (and I believe it's ALL '00-'05 Montes), that radio Theft-Lock can ONLY be unlocked with a GM Tech II Scan tool (which any GM dealer will have).

When I swapped radios in my '04 I found that out. The old "do this on the radio to get numbers, call this 800# to input the numbers and get an activation code" is for the previous generation of GM radio.
I know 100% the info 03SSLE is NO good on my '04, but I cannot confirm 100% of '00-'03 (but I suspect it still holds true, if the radio looks like what I have).

Some dealers I here will fix it with no questions, sometimes no charge, others charge a fee. It's a roll of the dice. I knew someone with a Tech II, so that's how I got mine done....
