i'm already far ahead of you on tearing the dash appart, doing a massivly thurough cleaning,
what i'm talking about it the theft lock, wasn't sure if it will let me take it out and put it back in without locking since it is staying in the same car or if i have to get it unlocked from the dealer becuase if it has to be reset from the dealer i just won't pull it out

no you can take it out all day long the theft lock should be no big no deal my old monte had that on the radio i took mine out and put it back in and had no problems when i put it back in if the theft light comes on all you have to do is call the dealer and they will give you a password to punch in to get it unlock it

Have you disconnected the battery since you've owned the vehicle? Did the radio still work after hooking the battery back up? If so, then the theftlock is not active and you have no worries.
If the theftlock is active then you need to retrieve a 6 digit code from the radio, call customer service to exchange the 6 digit code for a 4 digit code, then enter it into the radio.
Here's an article explaining the procedure:

I've never done this, but a search brought up several hits where this procedure was successful on '97 to '03 GM vehicles so I would imagine it should work on your '01.
