Default Your most memorable 500

What is your most memorable race? I have attended many there. Actually was going the day Dale died but we had been on a cruise to the Bahamas and decided against it at the last moment. Watched it on tv though SAD. Anyways I was there when Dale won, that was the best considering I was a big fan. Another was when harvick won, I was there to which also was great since I am a fan. Another I wont forget was when Ryan Newman (I dont think it was Mayfield)was driving the 12 car and flipped it. We were sitting close to where the wreck started and my wife and son were coming back from the restroom. They were walking down the front sidewalk and he hit the wall as they were coming by. They had dirt and stuff all over them. ALways loved going there. Wish I was there right now.. NEver been to the shootout but have been to the twins. Whats your story?

I've never been to a '500. I've been to a race at Martinsville, Charlotte, and Dover. I've done the little track tour at Daytona where you ride the trolly. I was just down there for my grandmothers funeral, if the funeral had been a couple days later we could have stayed for a race. (Wow, I'm cold)

My most memorable Daytona 500 was probably teh first one I ever watched start to finish in 1997 when Jeff Gordon won and they handed him that brick cell phone to talk to Rick Hendrick. I remember that because my dad had one at the time. The year that Sterling Marlin jumped out of the car to pull his fender off and Ward Burton won was pretty good... think that was 2002.

As far as most memorable race... well last fall at Martinsville was some good fun. But my best memory was also my very first NASCAR race. It was what was then the Winston at Charlotte in 2001 as an 11 year old boy. They dropped the flag right as it started pouring down rain and fortunately, we were under the canopy in Turn 2. The cars came down into our corner and all of them wiped out right in front of us, including Jeff Gordon and several others. Well Jeff Gordon went on to win that race in a back up car after his team pulled it out of the hauler and prepared it under rain delay. Being as it wasn't a points race, there is no rule that says you can't do that.

Qualifying the night before was a pit stop and 3 laps. You started 50 feet from the pit stall, took off and pitted, then came out of the pits as hard as you could to complete 3 laps. Power went out for whatever reason and the straightaways were vaguely lit. I remember watching the cars head into the corners, which were dark, and just listen to them pick up the throttle and coudl vaguely see them go thorugh the back stretch.

Here is the opener:

I remember that race, I wasnt there but have been to many coca cola 600's. I was always a fan of Steve Park. Shame what happen to him. He was well on his way. He still races but in the Winston West series I think. He did race the July Daytona race last year in a fan sponsored car and placed 13th. Here is a link where he crashed in his comeback race. Trying too hard. nasty crash with Dale Jr.

I remember that crash but nothing else about that race... they made a big deal about that Camera guy not moving or shaking or anything as a flipping car barrels towards him, I distinctly remember that.
