Default Picks/Las Vegas/Sun. Afternoon

Points, Intro, Congratulatory Remarks

Congrats to 77GP, Jerry for winning the spring Phoenix race for the 2nd year in a row!!! A strong run is giving him a lot of momentum this year.

Also, congrats to JuniorCar, Brent, for holding the points lead for a 2nd week! Brent has won 2 races in Speedweeks and will be hoping to carry that momentum into Las Vegas, where he is, by the way:

Defending Winner: JuniorCar

Here are the points going into Las Vegas. Remember, until Race 10, these points double as the points for Segment 1. At that point, we will have two sets of points, one for overall, and another for races 10-18.

Run Down for This Week

I personally will be holding Ford to some very high expectations this week. They had strong engines at Speedweeks, they had a strong intermediate track program last year, nad I suspect the combination of the above should cause Ford to have several strong contenders in Las Vegas

This will be a test of Stewart-Haas and Hendrick. Stewart should have won this race last year. And I don't think the Hendrick cars were strong on the 1.5's last year. This will be the litmus test for if they are championship contenders this year.

As will it be the litmus test for every team for the intermediates and what they are starting with this year.

For our NASCAR Fantasy, we now have to question our strategies. For three of five races, including the only two points paying races so far, the "All In" strategy of takign the same driver three times has won the race. I have to think it will eventually bite someone hard, but right now, that seems to be the way to win a race. What we have to wonder is how will that add up for points racing and winning segments/championships? Will an all in move win Las Vegas?

Roush Racing

Again, I'm holding strong standards. I think Ford still has the most wins of any manufacturer in the history of this track, which starts in 1997. Roush won like the first 4 races here. PErsonally, I expect them to win another one. Greg Biffles luck from last year seems to be turning around. Whether Kenseht can caryr on his Daytona success into another early win matters too, as Kenseth is generally a good early year driver for winning races. I'm also wondering if Edwards can bounce back from that near miss last year, and overcome once again that curse of the 99 changing sponsors agian.

Another thing is that we have to wonder how Roush does downsizing to a three car team this year.

Petty Motorsports

Ambrose and Almirola are quesitonable. Ambrose was running so strong at Phoenix, yet he had blown an engine last year at Homestead and again at Phoenix. So are they tinkering with the engines and experimenting? Can Ambrose car hold up for a whole race? Can Almirola not crash?

Hendrick Motorsports

Johnson seems to be getting strong again. We have to see how Gordon, Jr, and Kahne do with structure of Hendrick this year too. I'm expecting they may have another weak year.

Joe Gibbs Racing

I'm impressed with Dennis Hamster running 4th and 1st in the first two races, when he is normally crap. Grubb also has that setup that nearly won Las Vegas last year and the setup that Stewart was using to dominate those races at the end of last year.

That information is also shared with Busch, and Logano, who has the 20 now structured around him and seems to be having some inital success.

That TRD engine is looking good too. I'm excited to see how they run this year, as I suspect Dodge may be courting Gibbs to run their car next year.

Penske Racing

IT will be interesting to see how this team does both early in the year as later in the year, as Dodge will probably start pulling back their support of the team as the year goes on. For now, I have to suspect Keselowski and Allmendinger will be strong.

Richard Childress Racing

Burton still seems to be snake bit. Menard just screws stuff up. Yet Meanrd, for years, has run good at the beginning of a season and then fallen off after about Texas. So will Menard run good this weekend? Also, will Harvick keep running strong? I know several of you hope so.

MWR

At the Phoenix thread, I compared this team to Goose in Top Gun, you just know nothing good can happen to them. Bowyer and Martin may run good, but I just don't think they will seal the deal.

Also, this is a team that Dodge may court to run their Charger next year as well.

Stewart Haas

The first real test of Steve Addington and Tony Stewart is this week. Stewart was strong here last year and on the 1.5's, so what can Addington do to build on that performance?

Newman is just snake bit. And will he be after Edwards for that crap at Phoenix?

Phoenix Racing

Another snake bit team. Can Kurt Busch hold up?

My Picks

I'm looking at two teams... Roush and Gibbs. If I see what I want out of these two teams in practice and qualifying, I'm going to probably pick two from one side and one from the other, and hope it all holds up. I hate making picks early in the year... hard to figure out who has the momentum yet.
