ST. LOUIS (February 7, 2008) ----- Kurt Busch will lead the 23-car field to the green flag in the 30th Annual Budweiser Shootout at Daytona this Saturday night. Busch won the top starting spot through a random draw that took place at the Speed Channel stage at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday night. Mark Martin will join Busch on the front row as he drew the second-place starting position.

The 23 drivers eligible for the Budweiser Shootout participated in the annual Draw Party on Thursday night to determine the starting lineup for the race. Each driver selected a Budweiser bottle containing a numbered flag. The number indicated the driver’s starting position. Busch was the sixth driver to select a bottle and although he is excited about starting from the top spot on Saturday night, he said it only matters where he finishes.

“I think this race is a great, unique way to start the season,” Busch said of the Budweiser Shootout. “There are only 23 guys that get the special treatment. I’m starting first but in this type of racing I could be 23rd on the first lap. This is a tight group of guys that are tough but we’re looking forward to it.”

Busch makes just his fifth start in the Budweiser Shootout while Martin, who made his Shootout debut in 1982, makes his 21st start in the annual event Saturday night.

“I drew the number two starting spot because I didn’t want to start up front,” Martin joked after making his selection. “I like starting in the back and passing everybody. But we were just talking about how much different it is from 1982. I just feel like it’s a privilege to be in this race.”

The 30th Budweiser Shootout is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. EST start this Saturday. FOX will provide live television coverage of the event beginning with their pre-race show that will start at 8 p.m. EST.

Dale Jr. Wins Bud Shootout

Dale Earnhardt Jr. driving his brand new ride with Hendrick Motorsports, the #88 National Guard Impala grabs the win, in the first race with his new team. Dale Jr. led 47 of the 70 lap Shootout, which was split up into two segments, a 20 lap run, 10 minute pit stop, and a final 50 lap run. This is Earnhardt's second Budweiser Shootout Victory. The Jr. Nation at Daytona International Speedway certainly came out in force, clearly showing their support for the team change. Dale's post race interviews showed a completely different person, he seemed truly excited, refreshed, and very happy to be back in victory lane.

Yea he got lucky on a short race where all the best drivers had to ship in back up cars Saturday morning. Daytona is one of the only tracks that Jr can actually keep the peddle on the floor without blowing up his car (thanks to restrictor plates). He was complaining about a vibration with 5 laps left so he was very lucky it was a short race.

Hi JR , I wish I had Dale `Jr's Luck/Talent.
I'd trade him positions in a HeartBeat.....4-$ure.
Time will tell, his future. I think that all of the driver's that
are in NASCAR are blessed with talent, and they all
have proven that they can win.
I didn't get a chance to watch the `Bud, but I listened to
it on MRN Radio. It sounded like a super finish.
JR, thanks for your post, & Strong Opinions.
Maybe `Jr will win you over
before the end of the season : )?
