Yeah, when Junior Johnson ran the #3 in the late 50's and early 60's, he bought the rights from a 10 year old Dale Earnhardt to run the number until Earnhardt was old enough to drive it himself....

 

But ya see Duane, that's where you and the other Earnhardt fans are wrong. The #3 isn't Earnhardt's number. Its Richard Childress' number to command and do with as he desires. If you don't believe me, just ask Childress himself. Apparently all those #3 fans were showing their appreciation of the car owner.

And it was the same with the #8. Never mind anything Bud Moore ever did with the number or any other Nascar driver. That number belongs to Theresa, even if she wants to ransom it into oblivion.

These aren't the way I made the rules. Its just the way it is somehow...

 

Ahh, but it is different with Earnhardt. See, Earnhardt left that number to Richard Childress in his will. So prior to the 2001 Daytona 500, it was Earnhardt's number, reserved by the powers of the universe to be his until he was done with it. He just let people think it was Childress number.

Junior, on the other hand, was just too big of a ******whip to take what was rightfully his.

 

Its true. Junior should have armed himself, then gone in shooting up DEI Headquarters! There's a safe behind a painting in Theresa's office where she keeps the #8 hidden. I bet she'd open that safe with a gun to her head, then the #8 would have been all his.

But he didn't have the sack to do that. So I had to. And that's the story of how I became the driver of the #8 Budweiser Chevrolet!

 

And then you had the cahoneys to ride in my Ford around Bristol!

This time, Richard Howard decided he need more cars. Junior Johnson built two Chevrolet Monte Carlo's, and hired Lee Roy Yarbrough back to drive the 98 for him again, and Howard also approached Banjo Matthews, who previously owned the red #27 Torino, and asked him to build a Monte Carlo. The new driver for this car was A.J. Foyt!


The idea of three competitive Chevrolet's vs. just 1 brought many fans out to see the 1971 National 500 in a year when ticket sales and interest in the sport were waning due to the manufacturer back out. Bobby Allison in his Coca~Cola Cyclone on the race, but Glotzbach finishes 5th and on the lead lap in a rain shortened race. Lee Roy Yarbrough crashed on lap 120 and AJ Foyt dropped out on lap 184 with steering issues, however.

Do you suppose ... the guys with the "racing stripes" on there suits indicates that theynare the drivers?

How corny was that? Compared to the driver suits of today.

 

Nice looking race cars. I always liked them when they ran Street Stock here at the local track.

 

Another classic NASCAR Photo of the Day. We're sticking with the Monte Carlo theme again today. Here is AJ Foyt taking his Monte Carlo down into turn 1, I eblieve. If you look at the back of this pack, you can somewhat make out Lee Roy Yarbroughs Monte Carlo. So this picture must be from the 1971 National 500, the October race in Charlotte.
