Default Wont go Pass 4000 rpms !!!

Ok so I revved up my car when I started it up and it wont go pass 4000 rpm. I bought it used so I know Im taking chances of course. But I think it needs a tune up which Im doing really soon. Just wondering is there anything else I should look at? It doesnt run hard which ruled out a blown gasket for me Im thinking ignition coils but I felt that a little insight would really help.

I believe it has a rev limiter on it that won't allow it to rev past 4000 rpm. I believe you would need a tune on the pcm to allow it to rev that high.

The PCM is programmed to limit RPM to a max of 4,000 when the vehicle is in Park or Neutral. Some people raise the limit or have it removed when they reprogram their PCM, but the limit is there so you don't accidently rev the engine too high and damage it.

As far as a tune up, coils rarely go bad (and when they do, there are symptoms like mis-fires). A good set of AC Delco or NGK plugs would be good and a new set of plug wires.

The Engine speed is limited to 4,000 RPM under 5 MPH (I believe). If you're going 20MPH and go into neutral, you can rev up to 6,000RPM
