5th Gen ('95-'99): 3.1 wont rev over 4000 rpm / dies.?
Hi new here so if i do something wrong please let me know. Thanks. OK i have a 99 monte with 206000 mi. 3.1 Starts right up, idles great. First take off runs fine. After a few blocks it wants to die when i stop. But will start right back up and idle fine. I let it idle for over an hour, no problem. Here is the problem. It wont rev over 4000 rpm, sometime it starts around 2500 to 3000 rp. That is when it starts cutting out like it is not getting fire or fuel. Let it idle it is fine. I replaced the fuel pump in tank. ( that was fun haha ) Installed new crank sensor. They both were mentioned when i had a scan done. My fuel gauge works now. yay. Still runs the same. Dont know what to check next. Any suggestions ?? Thanks.
Your hitting the rev limiter it wont rev any higher unless its retuned. The stalling problem might be you have a clogged cat are dirty injectors

If its doing it while you're driving then there is another issue, could be plugs, maybe wires, a clogged air filter, clogged cat.
I recall this on a coupe of Cars I have owned the catalytic Converter it is like it falls apart inside and causes all kinds of havoc. This same thing occurred on a Grand Am, Monte Carlo & an Oldsmobile I have owned the mileage you have reported would indicate that it is possible. Could cost $300 to make the repair but that was a few years back.
good luck with it. Sometimes vacuum lines will cause a headache also one tube that runs from the engine area towards the firewall area may fall off and causes the vehicle to stop running.
