Unhappy Wiring from battery to starter and alternator

HAVE A HUGE QUESTION!!!
So, if you've read my new post, I'm new to the forum. We bought at 78' Monte Carlo and the guys that installed the rebuilt engine (89' Chevy Suburban) rigged up ALL the wiring. Nothing is labeled to what goes to what.. We've been trying to google wiring diagrams and what not.. We got the engine to crank, but can't get it to truly start. Yesterday, we accidentally burnt a wire from the alternator going to the starter. Can we bypass that by connecting the alternator straight to the battery temporarily? Please advise.
