Default what are these....(pics)

Hi there people, i just bought a 85 ss thursday night, got underneath the hood and got a couple questions. pretty much just asking whats in the pics.

this pic above^^^^ what is that cylinder type thing in the middle there? right in the front of the motor if youre leaning over the middle right in front of the car.

^^^this is, if youre lookin at it from the passenger side and looking towards the air cleaner, its right underneath i would say? also a cylinder looking type part...

and this is connected with a wire to the block on the driver side of the engine, in between the headers and spark plug wires and what not. im guessin a temperature sensor? or could it be a Knock sensor or something? or would the KS be lower than that?
its a stock 305 with some headers and exhaust, a jet chip, thats all.

thank you guys for any and all help in advance, id appreciate any help!

Hi Member: JoyRiDe,
I think a good investment for you is to get a Automotive
Repair Manual like the one below, or other's that
are available on 4th Generation Monte's.
I could not tell on your first pic, but I will look @ it again
after I had another cup of coffee.
Would enjoy hearing more about your Monte,
and seeing Pictures of the Exterior/Interior.
Good Luck from `Space

Cool, thank you sir! What exactly does that thing do? My monte isn't legal to drive on the streets and i have to run this thing through emissions. Only problem is i got the SES light on and the choke light is on too...It seems to drive ok though, just when it's idling it slowly creeps higher to an extent, any idea what would cause that?

http://www.monte-list.nu/tech/sescodes.shtml

not sure what the air diverter valve does. As for your carb choke and idle problem, those carbs are computer controlled. if you click on the top link, it will show you how to retrieve the SES trouble codes you have stored. all you need is an insulated piece of wire. Click on the bottom link and it will show you what the stored codes mean once you retrieve them. with any luck you'll have your carb issue fixed lickety split.
