Default RE: Trouble with the 5.3L SS (2006)

I just want to let you know that your car is buetiful. I have the exact same set up, silver trim and all. That being said, I agree that you should see white smoke but I don't either. Maybe it's becuase it is burning it slowly. I don't know but like you I want to get down to the bottom of this. I read a TSB about a sensor needing to be realigned to cool the engine better but like you my guage is just fine, so again I don't know. As far as the oil goes, I am just bias I guess. It's really a matter of opinion. I used to use Castroil then changed to Mobil 1. My friends all changed to AMSoil. I won't go there becuase to me there not as big and that means they may not have all the research capabilities as the big companies. Just don't use Pensoil or Quakerstate. When I was in college my instructor told us about the oil reserves that these companies use. We cracked open some blocks that used Pensoil and it was a nightmare. All of the crude gets melded to the side of the block. This really messed with the ability to cool the engine. As far as transmission fluid, I do use Mobil 1 but am thinking about going to Royal Purple becuase the T.V. says too. I know that's a dumb reason to do anything but I have never heard anything bad about it.

By the way my car's name is Betty. It is actually my Wife's car but I had to sell my truck when we moved to Germany so we share her for now.

Oh, I know this is an old thread, but since I am just about to do an oil change I thought I would chime in.

I also have the 2006 SS, and I always have to buy 7 quarts to fill it up (doesn't take all 7, but if I only put in 6 I end up reading 1/2 a quart short right away). I would agree that it is strange for you to see the oil level decrease after a month, but I have driven cars that burn about 1 quart over 3 months and they still ran fine (at least for vehicles that had 100,000 miles)

Also, I run Amsoil 5W-30 and I will never go back. I actually run amsoil in all my toys (street bike, dirt bike, snowmobile) and have had great results, so I have no problem recommending it. Plus, doing only 2 oil changes a year i pretty convenient

hey dude. i have had this problem before. when you get your oil changed they may have not started it after tey filled it. when they fill it the oil dosen go and fill every pocket. so after a while the engine does burn some of the oil as it goes. they pobably filled it to half way on the dipstic and then gave it to you. by the time the oil gets through the whole system its at the low mark and after a while the engine burning the oile put it to low.

I will have to remember this when I go for my oil change. 6-6 1/4 seem about right. I'll be using Valvoline Full Synthetic 5-W30.

after i took it out of storage i drained it completely. let it drain for over an hour and it ended up taking 7. so the average oil change would get 6 o a little more out of the system. synthetics prices went up i got a case of mobil 1 for like 60 bucks, it sucked
