Default Transmission question

Hi. I recently traded for a 1996 Monte Carlo. It has a 3.1 in it with a blown Transmission ( no reverse and only 1st and 2nd gear, rattle sound coming from tranny). Previous owner included a tranny from a mid 90's grand am with a 3.1. will this tranny work? It looks like I will need to swap the side covers so the transmission mount will work. But will this cause PCM issues or general drivability issues? Im not sure what the id codes are, neither tranny has the tag on them. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Ok, I called the local Chevy dealership and they were able to look up my transmission code by the VIN #. I have a 6AFW. Been looking on ebay, but none are listed with codes like that. Does anyone know the parts interchange number for a 6AFW? Several are listed with interchange numbers....

I would go on
Code:
http://www.car-part.com
and put in your '96 Monte Carlo and choose 3.1 L and see what comes up. I can see there is a 7AFW from a '97 Monte Carlo that is listed and should in all likelihood work if its listed. Once you find one I would call the junk yard and see if it will fit most times they can cross reference that stuff pretty good.

They might even be able to tell you if the Grand Am one you have will work. At a minimum I would think they can tell you what year cars and makes will work.
