Transmission options 2002 Monte Carlo
My grandson's 2002 Monte Carlo, 140,000 miles
he took it to a shop. They installed a shift solenoid. Now they're saying it may need a torque converter.
I am wondering what is available for junk yard transmissions and rebuilt/remans.
The labor is all the same.
It has been decades since I worked on a gasser or pretty much anything but a truck. Except some little things on the kids I'm really not even able at the moment.
What's available and how much money are we looking at?
I am open to opinions on the best direction to head. Mr. Transmission or similar shop, private shop
Thank you

They should have known from the start whether or not it needed a new converter. Seems like a red flag to me. How long ago did they do the solenoid before saying possible converter?
Stay away from any used transmissions with these cars. Theyre notoriously unpredictable regarding lifespan. Some last 50k, some say theyve gone over 300k. Mine personally went at 76k then 180k and Im now at 204k and showing signs again. I will say tho, from the 180k to now I have not been easy on it so...
The last two I have had rebuilt have been about $3500.

These guys are well known and reputable. Not sure if this is the route youre wanting, however. Having it shipped and all that.

Is there a best place to buy a transmission?
What kind of warranty?

I agree - triple edge is very well known for 4t65s if you're willing to pay shipping. TBH these transmissions aren't anything particularly odd though- any good local trans shop should be able to rebuild back to good for stock power. Triple Edges claim to fame is knowing how to make them hold lots more power (so certainly they'd also be good building a stock one - I just dont think its really necessary if you have good local shops).
I'd also avoid a junkyard trans for a DD. These transmissions can be problematic so you're really rolling the dice - even if it works day 1. It's fine for a some willing to gamble a bit on a cheap trans with the risk you may be pulling it again. But IMO the rate of failures on these is too high if youre not willing to try a few out to get a functional one. I know other cars, if you see major body damage (clear reason to total it out), and reasonably low mileage - the trans is usually good to go. But not on this platform.
