Default Red Brake Light

Hello everyone,

I have a 2003 Monte Carlo 3.8. I have a red brake light that has been coming on every so often in the cluster, It looks like the warning you get if you put the car in drive while the parking brake is set. The brakes work fine. The light goes off a few minutes later or the next time I start the car. The abs light has been on every since I replaced the driver side wheel bearing hub with an aftermarket hub. I don’t think that the abs light has anything to do with the brake light.

Has anyone ran into this problem?

A few possibilities could be "1" it's low on brake fluid which usually goes with the brakes are worn out. If that's the case, don't just fill up the master cylinder just change the brakes. The system is sealed so it doesn't use fluid. "2" it could be something with the parking brake. Perhaps you accidentally bumped the pedal and the cables are hanging up causing the pedal not to return all the way. There's other things, but these are a few common issues.

Thanks for the reply. The brakes and rotors are new all the way around. I was thinking that it’s something to do with the emergency brake, except when you have the e brake on and put the car in gear an loud alarm goes and the message center starts dinging.

I’m thinking that the level sensor on the master cylinder is going bad, because it only throws the red brake light every so often. Has anyone had to replace that part before?

Last time I saw those symptoms, I had to add some brake fluid.

The fluid level was the first thing that I checked. I’m too busy right now to worry about it.
