Here's how to override the shift lock on a 2006 Monte Carlo. First, remove the top of the shift console by pulling up on the plastic piece directly in front of the hinged cover. This is the piece that has the cup holders molded into it and it is held in place by 4 clips (i.e. it will pop back into place with no tools).

Next, shine a flashlight down into the console to the right of where the shift lever passes through (passenger's side). You'll see a wiring clip with 4 or 5 wires going into it. Directly behind this clip you can see a metal shaft with a flared top that looks like a button. This is the shift lock override button. Reach in behind the wiring clip with your right hand and press this button in. With the engine running, hold the button in with your right hand, press on the brake, and shift out of park with your left hand.

Now you can drive the car to your mechanic (or to your own garage) to find out why the shift lock solenoid is not working. On mine it was obvious. A wire going into that clip near the override button came loose and there was no power to the shift lock solenoid. I removed the clip, reattached the wire, and replaced the clip. Problem solved, fixed for free!

Hope this helps Matt!
I got this off the net at fix it .com..

Looking at this exploded view it looks like that shifter surround should separate from the lower portion of the console. Once that it off maybe it will give you access without having to pull the lower portion?

Yeah I kind of figured it out on my own but I appreciate the help guys, thanks. You guys were spot on.

Good thing this happened in the driveway and not out at some random place.

Notice anything fishy in the first pic? One of the wires completely sheared off from the connector. I noticed this before removing the whole console with just the cup holder portion removed and a flashlight shined down inside. So, the shift lock solenoid wasn't unlocking the shifter when the brake was depressed. I was able to manually override with the button next to the connector so I could move the shift lever back to remove the console and move the car into the garage to work on it. Rewired the connector, reinstalled and it works like it's suppose to again. Especially with the entire console removed, you can hear the solenoid click, or unlock the shift lever, when the brake pedal is depressed.

And rewired.

At least I was able to clean up a lot of areas and in cracks that aren't accessible with the console installed.

Glad it was something relatively simple. Just have to reinstall the entire center console.

Makes ya wonder Matt.
Did someone Purposely sabotage it(among others) on the Line when it was built?
Poor design on the part of GM?

Its good you were at home.. as well as able to get it in the garage for the repair!
Nice Job, A very clean repair.
Interior looks fugly without the console/interior assembled...lol
You can now rest easy again knowing it was a relatively simple fix....
Just frustrateing when it did happen im sure.

Wow I am wondering how that wire got sheared in the first place? Glad you figured it out Matt.

Yeah I don't know, and I'm not sure exactly how the wire came apart, but I'm glad it was something simple. The only thing that was a pain in the butt was the access to this particular wiring harness. It's visible with just the cup holder portion removed and is clipped in so there isn't enough room to get a hand down and grasp the harness with enough force to unclip it. Impossible to access unless the entire center console is removed.

Good thing is it's fixed, cleaned up and back together now... and I know how the entire center console is assembled now.

Thanks Tadd.

Glad to see you got it working again.

Tadd: I know this is not the first time I have heard of this happening, so I would say it was poor routing of the harness from the factory causing the problem. It might be worth it to for you (and other '06/'07 owners) to inspect the wiring as a preventative measure.

Thanks Mike, and thank you for the help as well.

I'm also wondering if the wire was somehow compromised during initial assembly of the harness itself or during installation into the car, like it was bent or something that created a weak spot which is where it separated.

Glad it was a cheap and relatively easy fix for you. Your car looks incredible BTW.
