I have had an issue with the button on the shift handle getting stuck. Normally it just takes an extra try or 2 to get it to release. But lately its been getting really stuck where you need to use alot of force to get it to break free and release. I'm wondering is there something i can lubricate to prevent it from getting stuck to the point where i cant push it?

1 other issue i had today, i made a turn (around 30mph or so) up a hill and i gunned it, downshifted 1 gear and it went to do another but just slipped instead and the revs shot up as if i was in neutral. Hopefully my tranny isn't on its way out. Any ideas would be great, thanks everyone

 

One thing you may want to not do is treat it like a stick car. I believe the manufacturer gives the optional downshift items for times when you might be towing a load with the car. Otherwise, using that on a regular basis can be somewhat hard on an automatic trans.

As for difficulty pushing the button in park, I'm not sure what would cause that other then perhaps a worn out shift linkage??

 

There is a solenoid under the gear shift/console, it is going bad/sticking

Quick fix = pop off gear shift cover piece with a flat head screw driver, locate solenoid and unplug it

 

Nighthawk beat me to it. Shift lock solenoid. Had it happen on the GTP I had so BTDT.

For having issues pushing the shift button to come out of park. To completely fix it you need a new shifter. I ended up buying on out of a junkyard for my grand prix and it worked just fine after that.

As for the other, check your trans fluid. If it's not bright red, change the fluid (I would not recommend doing a flush on a high mileage tranny) and see if that helps. If not, then you likely have internal issues. How bad? Wouldn't be able to tell you without taking it out and taking it apart. I need to pull mine myself as it's done something similar but I don't have money for parts at the moment.

 

The button seems too mechanical to be a solenoid imo. Got stuck again when i went to move it on my break. The cold seems to have affected it. The slipping, its never slipped before and hasn't since. I do need to check the oil.

 

No, the button is definitely a solenoid, I know - I just unplugged mine recently

The tranny on the other hand doesn't sound good... Change the fluid & filter... And hope that helps.

Do yourself a favor and put it in neutral when before you start. Otherwise you'll never get the console piece out. And of course take the handle off. The solenoid is right under the open spot in your console; I have my Aeroforce gauge & some CD's in that space. Just unclip the connector and you don't have to hit the brakes to take it out of park. But you should do that anyway, so yeah.
