Glad to here this is an ez fix, i was little scared when the check engine light came on and the temp gauge stopped working, seeing as i just got it 2 weeks ago, thanks for the help, ill let ya know how everything works out, glad i dont have to take it to the dealer or a shop

 

This is similar to my situation. After driving for about 1 hour, I noticed the gauge was dead (ambient 17*F), but no MIL and plenty of heat. ??? If the t-stat were open, I should be getting luke warm air at those temps. If the sensor were bad, I should get a light, shouldn't I? I expect these sensors work by resistance and the colder the coolent the higher the resistance, right?

Since I bought the car last year, I may as well do some standard mx of R2 the t-stat, hoses, sensor, etc., but I just thought it weird that I didn't get a check engine light.

Hi guys. Just wanted to ad to this. As I had posted earlier, mine has the same problem. Yesterday the car would not start because the baterry had gone dead with the single digit temps around here. Well Today I jump started it and now my temp gauge works. I didn't have to replace anything. Maybe one of you are reading this and have the same problem with your temp gauge not working. If so, do us a favor and disconnect your battery for about ten minutes or so and then reconnect. See if that fixes your problem. I'm wondering if it is just a reboot thing for the computer.

 

That doesn't work. Last year my battery died as well and I jumped it the next day and the thermostat didn't work still.

If it indeed does work...it's only a temporary fix. The computer will pick up the problem again and your temperature gauge will stop working again.

Best to just spend the $25 to fix the thermostat and coolant temperature sensor. Then you know it's fixed.

 

I heard that if you disconnect the negative on the battery for between 10 mins and an hour the code will clear. But I also heard it will clear on its own in time so maybe you should try letting it be first.

yep. It was fixed when I replaced the Temperature Sensor and Thermostat. I have since traded in my Monte Carlo for a 2008 Dodge Avenger. Got 6k for the Monte with 86,000 miles on it and the tranny was going.

Needed a 4 door with a baby coming. Hence the Avenger. I wanted something sporty, yet family oriented for the kid. The Charger was a bit out of my ballpark price wise.

 

A 4 door Charger just isn't right anyway.
