Default Starts in every gear?

I have a 97 monte carlo ls that starts in every gear, I've already replaced p/n safety switch on top of transmission.

SO are you saying the engine is off, gear shifter is in say Drive or Reverse, you can turn the key and start the engine? If so, my guess would have been the p/n safety switch. But now make me wonder is someone did some custom re-wiring to cause this behavior.

Yes, engine off, I can start in every gear. Also when I pulled the glove box to check for a vacuum leak I saw 2 non-factory wires that look like they go to the blower. But if I have to remove the dash does any know how difficult that is?

Fortunately never removed the dash on that model. But odds are you only need to remove a few panels or coverings and do some wire checks. You'll probably want the various schematics (which not sure if anyone here has those). Might also be some testing you can do probing the P/N safety switch to see if it was re-wired (again, need wiring diagrams to know what to look for).

Thank you, I'll start making my way down this list, also is this for a column shifter? I have a floor shifter but will still apply the same steps where applicable.

Should be for both this is the 99 version but they should be the same I would think. Have you opened up the console area? here are some shots of when I put my new interior in and it seems like there was an issue that was with a fuse that caused an issue with starting. But that has been several years ago now.
Another thing is unless you are the original owner, the previous owner may have disabled something to make it work different for them.

Seems like I recall that there was a fuse inline here someplace that caused a similar issue?

Thanks for the help, found out the problem and looks like I have some work cut out for me. The relay that controls the p/n switch and the ignition was cut out and crimped together. Along with a mess of wires that look like a 9yo did them. But removed the crimped wires and car won't start tell reconnected. Going to have to remove the dash some time and find the surprise of a wiring job to look forward too.
