Default So, my radiator cap blew off!!!

My radiator cap blew off this morning after about a 15 minute drive! The car started beeping and the DIC said the engine was overheating and prompted me to turn it off .

I topped up the coolant and drove it up to the mechanic. It threw a CEL but i completely forgot to ask what the code was, the mechanic told me he drove it around, topped up the coolant and it seemed fine. I'm thinking i may have forgot to tighten the cap the other day that i checked the fluids but im not too sure.

I had recently replaced the water pump and radiator cap. A friend told me that the cap could have been defective and to return it to the autoparts store, so i did. It was under warranty so they replaced it for free.

Im still confused as to why this happened????

Any ideas?

It could have happened for the reason you gave. For radiator caps, I recommend using a factory replacement. I've never been real impressed with the construction of most aftermarket caps.
