Default Should both fans come on?

Father-in-law just bought a 98 Monte Z34. He was questioning if both cooling fans should come on? I went over to look at it and we let it run for about 20 mins. the temp gauge got up to just a little over half way and one fan kicked on. I was looking at the manual and it says that the fan on the driver's side is primary and the one on the passenger's side is secondary. I'm assuming this means that the second fan only kicks on during really high temps? It's no where near being hot out so it's hard to tell if the second fan is actually working. I figured I would ask the guys/gals that own one. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi `Scott & Welcome to the MCF
If it's not heating `up, and the temp gauge isn't going up,
it doesn't sound like a problem.
The 2nd fan will kick on when it reaches a higher temp,
especially in warmer weather.
If the 2nd fan didn't come on in 20 min's, and the
car didn't heat up, I wouldn't worry about it.
Just advise your father in law to always keep an eye on all
his gauges as he enjoys driving his 98 Z34.
We wish him many safe miles, & we hope he jump's online
and post some pictures of his Z.
How many miles are on the Z34 ?
Good Luck to you & your Father/by/Law : )
EnJoy your Monte

No they dont both come on. You may get both to come on in the summer with the A/C on but other than that, you will probably only ever see one on. Mine primary barely even has to come on, let alone the secondary.

Yeap, turn your A/C on and see if both turn.

Thanks for all the responses! He's not the computer savy type but when I get back in town maybe I can snap a couple pics for you all.

The car has 177k on it and I'm not sure what type of work if any has been done to it. I'm pretty sure the lot he got it from has no records for this puppy. I haven't had a chance to drive it but he said it runs smooth. And it is a pretty Black on Black beast!

We did run the AC a little but that was before it warmed up, so I guess it wasn't warm enough to warrant the fan to kick in. I will tell him to wait till it starts getting warmer outside then maybe run it through a test of heating up.

Thanks again and that's the great thing about forums, all the helpful people willing to help!
