4th Gen ('81-'88): RPMs drop when braking and then car stutters on take off
Hey guys/gals. I run a 1987 Chevy ttop Monte Carlo with 39k miles on it. Garage kept it’s whole life and just started driving it regularly. When I come to a stop my car will drop to 500 RPMs and then will shift delay on the kick down. Then when I take off it stutters and doesn’t want to shift. I want to take the car from Indianapolis to California. But need to get all the kinks fixed. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Also this only happens when hard braking. I’m thinking it’s vacuum related due to the engine and brake booster both need air. Sometimes the choke light will come on and then off immediately when releasing the brake.

Check for a vacuum leak. Spray carburetor cleaner on all the vacuum lines and the carburetor, when the idle changes and goes up you found your leak. Since the car is 35+ years old I suspect the carb needs rebuilding . Good luck
