6th Gen ('00-'05): Relay chatters for 2 seconds.
2002 Monte Carlo SS 3.8 52,000 mi.
Good morning to you,
I finally had time to check this over closely so this is a new post again.
Whenever I turn the key on, or turn the key off, or open the door, a relay in the passenger side fuse box chatters for exactly 2 seconds. Another time it chatters [always 2 sec] is when the body module cuts the power, at it's prescribed time, while is am listening to the radio with everything shut off.
The relay that is doing it is marked "Back-up LP Relay" in the owners manual legend. The B/up lamps work bright and strong and you can hear the relay do it's little 'click', just as it's supposed to do, when you go back & forth from drive to reverse.
Of course when I pull the relay the chatter is gone. The relay itself can't be bad because there are three identical relays [Omron 12088567] in that fuse box. Switching relays with the other two makes no difference at all. The 'chatter' still comes from whichever relay is in that socket.
So it's obvious that this 'back-up' relay is tasked with a lot more than just turn the b/up lights on and off. Soooooo, I'm hoping, someone in this friendly forum has encountered this problem. I would appreciate any help.
Very sincerely
Mike
P.S. Not always believing what I read, when I pull the relay, the b/up lights, of course, do not work. So it's definitely labeled properly.

I'd check the body and the fuse box grounds....
Sounds to me like it gets grounded temporarily by all the things you mentioned... Thus causing the "Multiple" clicking..

Thank you both for your helpful input. I have all the schematics for this Monte but being retired now [Chev. tech and service mgr. 30+ years] I work smarter now. I figured maybe someone could have had the exact same problem and saved me a lot of time. Wishful thinking huh? So I'll open up the diagrams and trace those connectors [4] for that relay back and see where it leads me. I'll letcha know what I find.
Many thanks guys.
T'care,

Is there an identical relay under hood that you could temporarily swap out to verify the condition of the original relay? I'm leaning towards voltage drop/fluctuation or weak springs in the relay if it is mechanical.
