Hey all. I have an 01 SS with 140k on it. Its developed a rattle coming from the front of the car, happens at idle only. When I accelerate it goes away. The car also knocks when I go over speed bumps or dips. Im thinking motor/tranny mounts.Anyone have a diy for these? I cant imagine what the rattle is though.

I think you are having 2 different problems. First the rattle at idle could be anything loose, a bracket, retainer a hard line. without hearing the rattle myself these would be my guesses. As for the knock over bumps or pot holes, does it Klunk no matter which side you hit the bump with? Or is it on a specific side of the car?
Its not you Motor or Trans Mounts. you will only notice those on acceleration and decelloration. If you engine goes Klunk when you hit a bump then there are some Super major problems under your hood.
See if you can post a sound bite of the noises you are hearing and we can help you out better. Till then, this is the best I can do. Hope it helps.

Rattle at idle could be a bad tensioner pulley or a series of pullys are failing.... pulley bearings... etc....

As far as clunk/rattle sounds over bumps...
With that amount of mileage.. and if you have never done it... I'm putting my money on struts and strut mounts! That's your clunk and rattles over bumps etc... are coming from.

Regular maintenance for struts is generally around 40,000 miles. (replacement)
You have well over 3 times the mileage on your Monte for struts.
