The powertrain control module needs to see the real time data that is supplied by sensors such as engine coolant temp, mass airflow, baro, etc. to run properly.Power programmers optimize things like ignition advance, injector pulse width, cooling fan turn on temp to name a few,but still need the always changing sensor data input.

I know where you are coming from. Old School Hot-Rodding where there wasn't much hooked-up to the Engine but an Oil Pressure gauge. You could play with Advance and a Carb setting or two to git the most out of the Small Block essentials. Run the coolant at 160-Degrees, the Mixture a little bit lean and take the Advance just short of running backward and go look for somebody to race.

50,000 Watts of AM Radio blaring Top-20 Hit Music from a single dashboard speaker and scratches on the door and chipped roll-up windows from the Drive-in hamburger joints and movies. The Golden Days of Rock-'n-roll and 4-on-the-floor! Cheater slicks, Moon Equipped, Lake pipes, 3-2's, no seat belts and roaches in the ashtray.

If you are planning on going back; let me know when you are leaving so I can get a flat-top, Madras coat, black D1ckie and new new bottle of English Leather!
We'll take the shortcut around the lake after we wash the car.
Just Blondes.
Only Blondes; OK?

I know what ya mean. I started driving when the 8-tracks were just coming out. FM was just getting going. Wouldn't go back for anything, tho. Now I can go out and turn the key and the thing fires right up. Or better yet, push the button on your remote starter and let it warm up BEFORE you go out and turn the key. LadyT's '82 Olds Rehency 2-door coupe, you got to pump the gas and hit the key, 3 times before she fires. But she always fires! My '64 Impala SS, I miss the old cars. I like this new technology tho. LadyT's Christmas present, '07 Solstice GXP. 2.0L 260HP turbo. 0-60 in 5.3!
Yup they don't make'em like they used to. Got to have all the bells 'n whistles now. the K.I.S.S. rule (keep it simple stupid) has gone out the power window.
Anyways, if you want to simplify things a little, you can get sensor simulators that will bypass the sensors, and sometimes that does make things simpler. Such as the O2 sensor. Not sure how Onstar has an influence, other than being able to read codes
