P0440 is a problem with your EVAP system.

How has your MPGs been? Could be a problem in the system, not necessarily a leak, but is causing your car to run very RICH and causing you to smell the excess fuel?

Take off your cover and check the clip right behind the engine on the fuel line, Mine was leaking down by the headers!!! Youll just need an o-ring for the fix.

I know this is an old thread but will reply to the issue of strong gas smell.

My '03 had such a strong gas smell coming from the rear I swore it would have been discovered as a leak somewhere. It nearly brought tears to my eyes how strong an odor. Driving behind the vehicle was very bad.

Once one of the three coils were replaced the strong smell of gas went away.

spark plugs/wires were left as is...only one of the coils was the root cause.

I assume the smell in the car was due to the smell coming from any leak in the exhaust or the smell being sucked into negative pressure from inside at speed (wow....I really dont know what I just said!).
