Default P0440 code

I have had a check engine light on for some time now, So i had Auto Zone check it the other day and it says P0440 - Evap Emissions Control System Malfunction

Anyone get this code and have it resolved ?

I was going to start with buying a new gas cap and see if that works first, Any other suggestions ?

I would check the cap to make sure that it is on tight
I would also check the chart under the hood and follow the vacuum hoses to make sure there are no leaks

I am going to buy a new cap today, If it is the problem and i have auto zone clear the check engine light, does it just turn of the light or does it clear the code ?

Reason i ask is i have a inspection coming up next month and i dont want it to fail because the code is still in there. ( Assuming it fixes the problem)
