Default over charging

I have a 2001 SS. My volt meter is reading 18 volts.
My ? is the volt regulator in the alternator or is it
externally mounted ?

Take it to any WalMart or Autozone for a free test.

What if his meter is just out of calibration. I know, I repaired meters for many years.

That is why I suggested to go to a Wal-Mart before he spends $300 for an alternator.

Thanks, I changed out the alternator. All works fine now. What was happening
was once the alternator got hot(engine up to temp.) it would peg out to 18 volts.
did not want to fry all the electronics.
