the dealer is not going to look into how often you change your oil, if your smart change your oil right before you take it there...or recently before that...but the majority of dealers would not check it, most of the people that work there are young mechanics and wouldn't even take the time to check, i know i dont keep my receipts for oil changes and i dont know anyone who actually does, and they've never had any problems with warranty issues...the dealer gets paid no matter what, it doesn't matter. my dad took his pt cruiser into the dealer to get warranty stuff done on the engine, and the oil hadn't been changed for 30,000km, did they check, No, did they care? No....these people dont care, they get paid no matter what, so they'd rather do the job and get paid then say no and not get paid

Wiz,
I dont know about your dealer
I do know down here if you have an internal problem with your engine, the first thing they look at is records. If you do your own oil changes, you better have proof, if not they will put the bill in your hands.
Dealers are there to make money, not to spent money and if they can get away without spending their money they will.
I am a 30 year tech. I know the above to be fact. I have seen and heard to many times a consumer brings in the car for engine related problems and walking away with a big repair bill. This does not matter if the car is under manuf. warranty or extended warranty.
Good record keeping is a must in todays world.

I agree 100% with Michael ~Mrrench~
I keep a record of everything I do to my Monte Carlo.
Not just for warranty purposes, but when I go to sell it
to another owner. If you trade, they don't seem to care,
but when I do sell, it will be to a private owner and I will never trade
at a dealer : ( They just want to give you wholesale price on trades)
I know `if I'm buying a car, I love it when the owner has all
his maintenance records and receipts of services.
`Amen ~ Peace ~ `Space

I think I've mentioned this before.

First of all, my disclaimer, to each his own, I respect everyone's opinion.

Oil threads can tend to get very personal because there are those who insist that they are absolutely correct and they won't deviate from their opnion.

I have a friend who has owned an 'oil & lube' business for almost over 20 years.

He says (not me) that synthetic is genrally a waste of money, but he obliges his very picky customers because they are paying after all.

(I know there have been great articles posted on the advantages of synthetic and I enjoy them all.)

As a general rule of thumb, conventional dino with a good filter should be changed every 5000 miles give or take a few depending on your driving and conditions.

Most people in the "know" will even say 7500 miles for conventional oil is just fine.

There are Mercedes Benz's Ford F100's and other cars on record that have run well into the million mile mark on conventional oil without any internal seal or other damage.

My sister's 1994 Aerostar just hit 300k on dino.

If MCFers out there want to drop $50-75 every 5000 miles for an oil change, may God blessyour little hearts.

Shalom, out.....

On my new cars I keep a folder set aside in a closet and put all the records in there. On the vehicles I no longer care about I toss them.
