I agree. When the check engine light comes on, go straight to Auto Zone or Advance or whatever parts store you have in your area and they should read your code for free. It could have more than one, but only does one code at a time. You can buy a carbureted intake, standard HEI distributor, and 390 cfm Holley carb for that v6 but personally I'd put that money towards a 350. Trust me, it's money well spent in regards to a performance upgrade. There's a big loom full of wires coming from the inside of the car and up out of your passenger side inner fender. These are the wires that go to and come from your computer. They can all be clipped and it won't affect gauges, motor, or your hvac. Just be SURE that's what you wanna do. Once you clip them there's no turning back unless you want to splice about 30 wires back together. If I were you, I'd try to get it somewhere you can get the codes read when the check engine lights on for now. Read the thread "removing the computer from your 4th gen monte". It's in the how-to section for 4th gen montes. (same section we're in now)It has a lot of good info on this.

Is there any way to check the error code in Monte 86 on my own, without help of diagnosis equipment ?
