newbie with a 86
Hi, i'm not to the forum, and new to Monte Carlo's...i just bought a 86 with the 4.3...the body is great, and it runs...but it has a problem...when i start, it creeps up in speed, really slowly...the gears all shift, but it just won't go...i had to drive it home with the hazards on for most of the ride...if i went down hill, it would pick up speed, and it would keep the speed on flat ground, until i had to let off the gas or stop...then the same thing all over again...the previous owner was clueless with cars...he said someone put in a v8 MAP and it went crazy...they then put in a V6 MAP...but it started this problem...the engine light will come sometimes, but when you shut it off, and re-start, it goes off...any ideas where to start...i'm gonna start obviously with plugs, wires and PCV...but any thoughts on what this could possibly be besides tune up?...thanks everyone....
Thanks everyone...looks like a informative forum...i'm going to enjoy it...and i'll try the Cat...maybe just cut it off all together...
anyone every do TPI removal for carb?...i know i need to change the intake, carb and dist...but what do i do with all the connections going to the computer?...what do i leave, what do i dump?...i did see another post about it, but it was for an 8cyl and i'm not sure it it carries over to the 6...thanks again everyone....

If the MAP sensor is malfunctioning it will affect the air/fuel mixture. Since the problem came about around the same time the MAP was replaced I'd focus on it before thinking about chopping off the cat.
Why do you want to get rid of the TPI? It's a lot more responsive and efficient compared to a carb. Just curious...

if i can get this running right with just a new map sensor, or the cat, then i'll leave it...but if i change the map and that doesn't work, then i check the cat and that doesn't work...i can assume it's one of the other many sensors and i can't afford to change them all one by one...my wife will divorce me in a weeks time.....
There is a GREAT article on here about getting rid of the computer in the car. If it were me, I would remove the motor completely in favor of a larger 350. Cheap, easy to find parts, makes plenty of power. Carbs, when tuned properly can still knock down great fuel mileage.
Again, the article on getting rid of the computer in the car would be where I would start if your going to switch to a carb.
