My trunk shock keeps breaking!
Hi everyone, first time poster here looks like a great site
Anyway my 2006 MC LT has a continuing issue, the right truck shock keeps breaking all at the top part. I re-install it then a short time later it does same thing. Any advice on how to rectify this? Ive gone thru at least 2 and I realize this is a minor thing but still annoying , thanks in advance

I really cant recall the quality of the parts, maybe I should get GM parts, and as far as a wreck not to my knowledge
The stock ones on my 07 lost their strength so I replaced them in 2020. The new ones opened the trunk so fast I would have to catch the lid before it shot to the top. One day I hit the trunk button and wasn't close enough to catch it and it broke both struts when the lid opened all the way. I got new ones again, different brand, but they still open too fast. I thought about sticking weights to the inside of the lid.

I have been down this road. Twice I ordered non-GM replacements from Rockauto. Did not take long until the head on one of the pair would break. I finally replaced with genuine GM replacements (I think the genuine GM was $60 for the set and the cheapos were around $20). And I now understand what happens and why your win is the genuine GM.
- Generic ones will lift the trunk, too easily. If the weather is right, you can push the trunk pop and the trunk lid FLIES open. So problem #1. Second problem, when they do this and fly open with such force, it pushes the trunk lid to over extend the shock. As a result, the rapid trunk opening force and over extending will cause the head to snap.
- Genuine GM will NOT do anymore than slight pop the trunk. You then need to actually lift the trunk for the shocks to work. Also, in a brief split second, before the shock reaches the end of it's travel, it slows down the speed at which it extends. It stops the chance of over extending and removes the problem of the plastic head cracking.
Both the blue and black Montes have genuine GM shocks. I replaced the ones in the blue years ago and replaced the ones in the black this year.
