Shouldn't need to replace the lock cylinder. If you do you will either need to use the key that comes with the new one or reset the tumblers. You will also need to do a security re-learn procedure since the chip is in the cylinder. If you re-use the old cylinder none of that is necessary. Dorman is OK. ACDelco is better, but I wouldn't advise any other brand.

Yep, the reason why I said 7th gen is because the write up is for an Impala but the steps are almost identical. The 7th gen Impala covers the same years as a 6th gen Monte and the vast majority of repair procedures and parts are the same. I probably should have clarified why I said that though, we have both the Monte and Impalas so I'm aware of that but maybe the op isn't. Good catch!

 

Isnt the ignition switch currently under recall? it is on my 02

 

Very possible if it is the original switch. But if the dealer takes things apart and it was already replaced they would likely charge the typical arm and leg. I called to see if I could get reimbursed for at least the part I bought but they would not do anything because the work wasn't done at the stealership. Typical GM customer service.

 

The recall doesn't replace the switch on gen. 6's. They just modify the key to counteract excessive key weight.

Interesting, I saw a recall notice on the 2001 Monte to replace the ignition switch which I had already done myself, nothing to do with the key. On my 07 impala the recall is only for putting the different plastic top on the key so someone can't hang a pile of keys off it because the ignition switch might get damaged. So GM wants to just fubar the key itself and not verify the ignition switch itself. Sorry for the rant, this probably deserves it's own thread but I know someone whose daughter had a rollover caused by their ignition switch failure.
