Mobil 1 Ext Perf - change interval
This weekend I changed the oil in my L67 and went with Mobil 1. I went with the Extended Performance since it was the same price as the lesser Mobil 1 - also because it was on sale at PepBoys and the Mobil 1 filter was basically free when you bought the oil.
So my question is around oil change intervals with this specific oil. They claim 15k miles for the oil, but does anyone actually wait that long? I assume waiting beyond 3k is possible, but not sure how far I want to push it - 5k or 10k maybe? With the Mobil 1 filter in place, should the filter be changed more often than the oil in this scenario?

I think 3000 miles is a thing of the past... Cars are too fancy to have the same maintenance requirements as they did 20 years ago....
Granted, I still do mine every 3000 miles.
I know the guys at Goodyear have a synthetic blend of oil that they say lasts 5000-6000 miles.
I wouldn't wait 15,000 miles either way though, I like to have a mechanic look at my car for other issues as well.

As an FYI, the Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil is not the recommended oil for the L67. Will it make a difference? Probably not. I bought oil this weekend, (3) 5 qt. jugs. I bought Mobil 1 Extended :Performance for the '82 Olds 98 Regency, Castrol Edge for the Solstice, and Mobil 1 regular for the Intimidator SS. The Mobil 1 regular and the Castrol Edge both meet the GM4718M spec for the boosted engines, but the M1 EP doesn't, but I feel it's some of THE best oil out there for N/A engines, even those almost 30 yrs old.
The Olds I'll change the oil every spring. She doesn't get squat for mi/yr. The Solstice gets an oil change every 3-5,000 mi, depending on what oil I'm using (always full synthetic), and about every 6,000 mi on the Intimidator SS and the LS1 Silverado, with 200K+ mi.
Can you go 15,000 mi on this oil? I think you could go more, if you change the filter every 5-6,000 mi, and topped off with the M1 EP oil. I have gone 10-12,000 before with my last few vehicles. We have 600K+ miles on full synthetics, and have never dropped an oil pan nor ever pulled a valve cover in those miles. Further, they don't leak at the seals.
We are living in the 21st century. I believe in using 21st century products, including the best in today's chemistry. That includes some of the high mileage guaranteed engine lubricants, whether it's the Mobil 1 EP, Valvoline, Castrol, Amsoil, Royal Purple, or whatever. I've ran Royal Purple before, and honestly, I believe it's the best out there. I just can't afford to run it.

Thanks for the input. Truth is Royal Purple was my first choice, but I had some of my boosting fan buddies tell me they swear by Mobil 1 including an experienced racer. I might have still gone with Royal Purple since there was only a $2.50 price difference in the two, but the Mobil 1 was on sale (did I mention that already? I forget!) and the Mobil 1 filter was basically free.
I reviewed some info on the specs and knew that Mobil 1 EP didn't meet the newest spec. However reading up on that it seemed that the EP version didn't meet the spec for energy efficiency reasons, not due to a lack of protection in boosted engines. It also appeared that the new spec may have come out about the same time or shortly before EP appeared on the scene, maybe too close for the product to have had a chance to conform to the spec. It appears EP did meet the previous spec, and it's clearly stated on the product web page it is suited for use in NA and boosted engines and that ExxonMobil stands behind the product for use in these motors. Definitely interested in others opinions, so if I'm off base in anything I've said above please feel free to correct me!
As far as the intervals, I'm right with both of you. I shoot for 3k miles for all of my cars, at least so far. With this EP though I may just swap the filter at 5k or so and examine the oil at that point. Based on what I see, I'll make a call then. thanks!

i've used several different brands of synthetic oil in the past. i've stuck with Q-horsepower for while now since it's the cheapest usually. i usually go around 7.5k-8k on each oil change. i cut the oil filter open every time and it looks virtually spotless every time. 3-5K miles on synthetic oil change is excessive and wasteful imo. with all the technology in oil and engines these days, conventional oil will run 3-5k easily.
I only use Mobil 1 in my Monte. I have used the regular Mobil 1, and the Extended Performance Mobil 1, mainly the EP Mobil 1 5W-30.
3,000 mile change intervals are a total waste IMO, even on conventional, Conventionals are good for 5,000 miles at least. (If I ran conventional, i'd change every 5K).
Synthetics are good for 7,000+ miles easy. I change my oil based on the OLM, and that tends to be every 7,500-9,000 miles usually. If I was just going by mileage, I would change synthetics every 7,500, and that is more than enough.

Question: Explain Why Mobil 1 Extended Performance Not GM4718M CertifiedCan you please explain the difference between GM6049M and GM4718M? I have read several answers on this site that state that using the extended performance Mobil 1 will work just as well as regular Mobil 1. I just want to understand what is different between the two specs, and what about the extended performance does not allow it to be GM4718M certified. Thanks, Clint-- Clint Kline, Anderson, IN
Answer: GM 6094M is based on the same specifications as ILSAC GF-4 but additionally includes some specific GM requirements. GM 4718M is the GM high performance oil specification that goes well beyond the industry standard ILSAC GF-4 and API SM specifications. The Mobil 1 grades that carry GM 4718M have been fully approved and tested against GM 4718M. The companion Mobil 1 Extended Performance viscosity grades have not been formally approved against GM 4718M but will provide the performance at GM 4718M level. Engine testing required to get formal approval is limited to certain Mobil 1 products only.
