If your struts are ok too, check your parking brake shoe that's sitting behind the rotor. Mine fell off of its mounting bracket and was tapping away on every bump. At first I thought I had a loose bolt rattling in the bumper or my struts going bad.

I've got the same annoying clunk/rattle in the passenger rear. It is annoying as hell and its f-ing embarrassing! makes the car sound like a total pile of crap. Had my shop look at it once and he said without taking everything apart they couldn't see anything wrong.

I just had a new symptom begin that sounds like the strut bearings going bad even though I just replaced them. I put it on the rack. It's the bushings for the rear sway bar

Thanks to everyone who responded but this is still driving me crazy. As I understand it the strut mount is the piece of metal at the top of the strut assembly that the spring presses up against. I don't think it could be a strut mount because I used quick struts and that had new mounts in it. Or is a strut mount somewhere else in the car?

A parts diagram would be really useful but I don't have one.

The strut mount is the piece at the top of the strut assembly that has the 3 bolts that go up into the trunk area.

First time I heard this sound I thought it was the struts so I replaced them, then I thought it was the rear sway bar bushings so I replaced those, then I thought that it was the rear hub bearing assemblies so i changed those (actually, my right assembly really needed a change, it was getting hard to turn by hand lol). I love working on cars, it's a hobby for me not a necessity but this clunking thing is just making me laugh now. And it's the kind of laugh that has people running for cover.

Ok so that upper strut mount was included in my quick strut assembly. Since the clunking sound happened with both the old and new strut assemblies this makes me think that the metal part of the car where the strut bolts to is weak or damaged or something. Does that make sense? Or does it mean that I bolted the assembly up incorrectly?

Again, I really appreciate everyone weighing in on this. This thread has gotten a ton of views so I guess most people are pretty stumped, huh.
