Mine was NOT the on-star mirror that exploded on me. I don't know if the on-star mirrors have the same problem or not, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
I gotcha. Sorry I misunderstood.

HAHA yes, I too know the feeling of the black on black

especially when you wear shorts and have a seat on that nice scorching hot leather...

im sorry but this makes no sense at all, I live in florida which frequently means that my interior is 100+ degrees for the entire day and i've never had any kind of problem like this, i think you just had a defective mirror

I've never heard of this, but thanks for the warning.

I've never heard the term "electrochromatic fluid" and am thrilled with this. I will use this term at least 3 more times today and make sure everybody knows my mirror is electrochromatic in the future

Electrochromatic
Electrochromatic fluid
Electrochromatic thermal evaporation

awesome

this is definitely true, my dad (warranty inspector) has told me horror stories about those things and they're impossibly difficult to deal with. this was one of the things he was not so keen about when we went to look at my car at the dealership. i didn't know the heat would be a factor in the exploding/leaking, but it makes sense. assuming the fluid is contained in a particular space, if it expands in the heat and has no where to go, i imagine it would eventually expand beyond the limits of the container holding it and *poof* there ya go, fluid everywhere. i found a link with a little bit of info on how it works: http://ask.cars.com/2008/08/what-is-an-elec.html and i'm sure if you googled further you could find more info about them breaking. there's definitely a sh*t-ton of them for sale on ebay.

This is good info to make note of. Moving it to the Do-It-Yourself section for future reference.

Thanks!

I don't believe it was a defective mirror. Because when it happened and I had no idea I started researching it. And this type of mirror (electrochromatic) is used in a lot of other cars, so I found myself on other car forums just researching this problem. It is common, I'm not saying it WILL happen, but if you can crack a window and prevent this on a hot day, you will save your interior, your mirror, and a lot of headache.

You are very lucky not to have your mirror explode. Remember mine went 8 years without exploding. But it's still something good to know about now, so you can prevent it, or if it ever happens you know why and don't have to do tons of research.

Also the fact that Florida stays constantly warm could have something to do with it. Up here we have cold mornings and then a hot day, then cold again. This constant change in temperature effects liquids, making them expand and contract. This could change the variables concerning yours always being in warm weather.

I'm still calling it bull****, we have plenty of cold mornings here and everybody i spoke to, from dealerships to local salvage yards, know nothing of this, I'm sticking with you, and anybody who's mirror broke, had a defective part. Do you not think that GM would have tested something like this beforehand?
