Default Keyfob memory question

I've got a 01 Monte LS and have had the car for about 8 years. I bought a pair of keyfobs after mine had failed about a year after buying the car. I programmed it and haven't had any issues. About a month ago my wife said her keyfob didn't work and that it wasn't the battery. So I got out the second one I had bought, programmed it and she was on her way. About two weeks ago was the first time I driven the car since programming her keyfob and when I went to unlock the doors it didn't work. I didn't give it much thought thinking I probably have a dead battery. When I returned I checked the battery and it was fine so I tried programming my keyfob and it worked so I thought I was good. Later that day she told me her keyfob wasn't working now. So what I discovered is that when I program one keyfob into memory, it kicks the other one out. I read that the car's memory can store 4 codes max so I'm assuming that we have reached that. My question is does anyone know of a way to clear all the codes from this memory so we can start over as I have a new driver in the house and was going to give her a keyfob also. Any ideas guys? Thanks

My understanding, is that when you go into the programming mode, all previous key fob memmory is lost, and when you are programming the remotes, all must be programmed at the same time before exiting the programming mode.....so, if you're programming 3, you must program them all before exiting out of the fob programming mode....at least that's what I learned. Good Luck!

Jonathan is right on the money!
The moment you enter programming mode and program just one fob, the previous fob memory is erased and that one you just programmed is added.
Any time you do a FOB programming, ALL FOBs must be present and re-programmed at that time.

Thanks for the replies guys but now I'm really confused. When she got home I took both keyfobs to the car and was going to try to do both at the same time. I was using the same procedure as I've done before but now I can't get it to chime at all. I tried both and it won't recognize either one. Her's still works but I can't get it to program mine and kick her's out like before. Maybe my procedure is wrong? I would turn key to ACC, hold DISP button until SETTINGS appear, press scan button until KEYFOB PROG appears, press NEXT until BEGIN appears, hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons down on the keyfob until I hear the chime, and then EXIT. Does this sound right? Thanks again

Perhaps it makes a difference as well, to have the key in the 'ON' position with the engine not running---it did with mine and some of the settings.....also, make sure that you select 'EXIT' only once and that you do it AFTER both keys are programed. Thats what worked with mine....if that doesn't work, there could be a different and more in depth issue.

This is from my 2004 owners manual. The first part is about getting to programming mode.
Programming Mode
To reset or customize the features, first enter the
vehicle customization main menu. To enter the main
menu, do the following:
1. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON. The radio
must be off.
2. Press and hold the TUNE DISP **** on the radio
for at least five seconds until SETTINGS is
displayed.
3. Press the SEEK PSCAN up or down arrows to
scroll through each available feature on your
main menu.
4. Press the 1 PREV or 2 NEXT buttons to scroll
through the lower menu. An asterisk (*) will
appear next to the item that is the current setting.
The following information shows how to reset or
customize features after entering the main menu
FOB PROG (Remote Keyless Entry
Transmitter Programming)

This feature allows you to match the remote keyless
entry transmitter to your vehicle. To match the
transmitter do the following:
1. Scroll, using the SEEK PSCAN up or down arrows,
until FOB PROG appears on the display.
2. Press the 1 PREV or 2 NEXT button to enter the
submenu. BEGIN will be displayed.
3. Press the TUNE DISP button to start programming.
When the message PUSH FOB flashes, press and
hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the
first transmitter at the same time for 15 seconds.
A chime will be heard to verify the transmitter
is learned.
4. Repeat Step 3 for each additional transmitter.
The transmitter is programmed now. You can either exit
the programming mode by following the instructions
later in this section or program the next feature available
on your vehicle.

Lougreen got it. Those are the steps to follow. You litterally get to Fob Programming, hold the two buttons down on a fob, hear a chime, then repeat the button hold down on the next fob. Once all fobs are programmed, exit the fob programming screen. Done.

I don't have an easy way to clear the fob memory without a fob. Our Impala has the same fob as the Monte. Since I added a remote start that also has keyless entry, the factory Impala fob is no longer needed. At one point, I had a fob that controlled BOTH the Monte and the Impala. I had to re-program the Monte for just the ONE fob I had.

Got it guys. I'm pretty sure I was leaving out a step. I don't think I was pressing the DISP after BEGIN was displayed to get the PUSH FOB command. Everything works good now thanks to you guys. Thanks again, Frank
