I'm not exactly sure how to go about it, but I am sure a reading of pressure is needed pre-catalytic converter. If you dig around via the search box here, you can find the exact psi which indicates a healthy catalytic converter. You can probably locate this on google as well. I found it last night, but didn't bookmark. Just a word of caution though, the back pressure caused by a failing catalytic converter can place a disastrous amount of strain on your engine, so if you do confirm it to be the problem be sure to replace it as soon as possible.

Isn't there a 3.4 downpipe available somewhere?

Hey you should anyways, I'm definitely interested in exploring that route. If you also have any youtube videos that could give me an idea of how it sounds and any extra info that would be cool. I'd have to equal out that mod with better air intake, right? I really don't feel like replacing my catalytic converter again if it ends up being my issue this time around, because from what I understand failure is likely to persist in 00-04 models, right?

My 03 was doing the same thing. Mine is a 3.8 and it turned out to be the FPR.
