Intake - Backfire - Explosion & Fire
So, I am really glad to have my 2002 MC SS daily driver back on line. Story: As my son-in-law [Brad] and I were finishing up a day of car work, I went to start "my baby" and it backfired big time. It blew up the upper 'plastic' half of the intake manifold, blew out the PVC assembly, the oil filler breather cap and one of the fuel injectors putting a significant bend in the fuel rail. As if that wasn't enough it also established an immediate flame front across the back side of the engine. That got the attention of most of our neighbors and got "Momma" (wife) pretty upset, but all was good and with the help of Momma and Brad, I had the fire out pretty quickly with no serious fire damage. Today, I went and got all the parts I needed off of my oringinal engine, cleaned up all the intake pieces, water, fuel, etc. - pulled all the plugs, spun the engine a few times with no plugs/compression and all sounded good so I put it all back together. I "fired" (no pun intended) it up and it settled down nicely with no further mishaps. I took it for a spin and got into it pretty heavy a couple of times. It responded well with no issues. Thankfully, nothing was “seriously” damaged, nothing else was affected and no one was hurt. It made for an interesting evening and it gave the neighbors something to talk about.

Questions:
- I had one suggestion that a failed fuel pressure regulator could have been the cause. Agree? Disagree? Other possibilities?
- Anyone else had a similar or related problem?
- If so, what caused yours, how did you determine the cause, how did you fix it?
- I hear there have been a number of such cases - anyone know where I can find any documented cases? Anyone know if GM has documented any such cases &/or causes.
