Default Homelink No Display At All?

So I was messing around with the Homelink the other day and cycling through the functions and checking out my MPG. Then the next day the Homelink was blank. Its like it went dead or something? There is no display at all and no sequence of keys seems to make it come to life? I can't find anything anywhere to tell me even where to begin to check for problems? I did notice a few days before it went dead that it was working but would sometimes display some gibberish. I only noticed this because it caught my attention on a time or two.

Any suggestions on where to begin to troubleshoot this thing?

Well now this morning on my first commute it was powered on. It still read my MPG. I hit the "mode" button to cycle it through the other functions and it went blank again and would not come back on for the duration of my travel. It also stayed blank once I restarted the car to come home.

Any ideas? It sounds like a short but where is it tied into?

Oops sorry its an '01 SS 3.8L Series II.

No I have not but there was an aftermarket Kenwood detachable face installed when I bought it. Also a run of patch cables and ground wire and wire from the battery in the trunk for an amp when I bought it.

123,000 miles on it.

No other electrical issues that I am aware of.

Thanks for any and all help.

Still intermittent problem with this working sometimes and not other times.

Any suggestions at all? I'm thinking it has something to do maybe with this aftermarket stereo this guy put in here? Sometimes it lights right up and works for the duration of the trip and other times its blank and will not turn on at all.

Mine did that and a couple things when that was acting up, it turned out being the ignition switch

Ah thanks man for a starting point. You know what the ignition in this thing is hobbled up. I don't know what this dude did to it but its almost like the ignition was "punched" out at one time. The bezel around the ignition switch is gone so its just the cylinder that is left. I would bet you are onto something here. Thanks for the info.

I have other repairs to make first so this will probably be last on the list as its not crucial that this work. Its nice to have it but I gotta some other things working first.
