Default Hesitation Starting

Having problems starting. Sometimes it starts right up but it's becoming more frequent that it's taking several tries. Today I was trying to start it and on the third try, it started to start, but then there was a "pop" sound and then smoke was coming out from under the hood. I hear the electric fuel pumprun for a couple of seconds before actually starting the car. What are the possibilities? After the car is running, I don't have any problems with it stalling at any other point, this is strictly a startup problem...at least for the time being. The car is a MC 2003 SS and I've personally haven't swapped out and fuel related parts. There are 72,000 miles on the car. Thanks

Hi `Branden,
To me it sounds like the teeth are worn on the starter.
Has it ever been replaced ?
Is your Monte throwing any codes ?
If it's only happening sporadicially, it could just be a worn starter.
Have you checked to see if your starter is tight ?
Please be patience, and I'm sure one of our expert
tech mechanic's will post their idea's/solutions/suggestions.
Good Luck, from `Space

Go to your local auto store. They should be able to do free testing of your starter.

That doesn't sound like a starter issue...But testing it sure won't hurt.
