Default GM PassKey 3

What is it and how does it work.? Does anyone know for sure?

My owner's manual says that if you havea + sign on your key, you have a PassKey 3 and your car can only be started with those specific keys.

I have the + sign. Is therea chip in my key?

My Cadillac had the PassKey 2 system and there was a visible unique resistor chip in the key. Replacement keys were $15-$25.

I don't see where a chip or some other security device would be implanted in my key.

I believe there is a RFID chip in the key head. It is activated by a small signal the control module sends throught the switch and the key returns the right code.

Kind of the same idea as the security gates at the exit of department stores.

Thanks, makes sense. They are passive and don't need any power. They just reflect a radio signal.
