Default Gas gage only reads full or empty.

I have a 02 monte ls..and for the past couple of weeks the gas gage has been acting up. When I put gas in the car it says full but when I'm getting tworads the end of my tank it reads empty. There is no in between. And I don't know if this has anything to do with it but when I get gas I have to hold the nozzle the entire time and pump very slowly or the pump will stop and this happens at every gas station ive been to. I have a few ideas of what it could be but I don't want to replace anything that I don't have to. Any ideas?

Hi Yes-Yes (That's the name you have in your profile)

You have a grounded sending unit. If the gauge reads full all of the time then there is a bare wire or the sending unit itself has gone bad and grounded out. To me it sounds like a bad sending unit. Check back to see what our other member's post on your problem...Good Luck

Check your connections, Or your float is sticking or gone bad ?

I had the exact same problem with mine, its the sending unit which is part of the fuel pump. Just replace the fuel pump its all one piece and there is an access panel in the back of the truck under the felt to replace the fuel pump, which might I add is a whole lot easier than dropping the tank. But I am 100 percent confident that is what is going on with your monte. Hope this helped and good luck.

Sounds like 2 problems to me.

A. Bad sending unit/pump

B. Plugged vent, possible vent valve

It costed me ruffly 200 and a hour mabye for the install at most because gm gave you JUST enough room to fit the new one in.

No the sending unit is all on one piece the whole pump has to be replaced and I would also STRONGLY recommend replacing the fuel filter at the same time so you don't have to buy twice

Everyone I talked to stated that you have to replace the entire Fuel Pump but that is not true. I had the exact same issue and just replaced the Fuel Level Sensor. It was a DORMAN Part # 911008. It cost about $20.00 from Rockauto. Here are instructions to remove the fuel pump and then you install just the Fuel Level Sensor.
